A further study built on findings previously released by the University of Rochester has again yielded proof that playing action video games can actually have a positive effect on cognitive function and the ability to learn. The study had control groups playing different types of games for one week. Various learning and interpretation tasks related to IQ levels were then performed on each of the players. The research showed the action game group performed far better at quick learning and observational tasks than the other group. They also displayed a quicker learning curve. The research team concluded that playing action games in moderation can strengthen cognitive function and facilitate the brain’s ability to interpret situations. More significantly, the researchers found that these cognitive improvements lasted months after the experiment, suggesting that action game play has long-term benefits.
